Our fighting sticks are styled on the sticks actually used in martial arts stick fighting. They undergo a different seasoning process than our other sticks, necessary to produce a balanced, fast, and accurate weapon. Although they can look like walking sticks they are not always suitable for use as a walking aid due to the different grip and feel of the stick. They are designed to be carried by holding the shaft about a third of the way down. "With your shillelagh under your arm."

 

Most of the sticks offered on this page are oil treated to the point where they can be exported as sealed wood but can still be given a final outer finish of the buyers choice - 

 OIL  (choice of most stick fighters and can be re-oiled or refinished as desired)  Allow 28 days for delivery of oil finished sticks. Inscriptions are not usually viable on oil finished sticks. ​After about 6 months, or following a hot summer, sand very lightly with fine 200 grit or so, sandpaper. Apply a fresh coat of danish oil with a cloth, spread as thinly as possible and rubbed well in. Wipe of excess after about 5 mins and allow to dry for at least a day. Further coats can be applied in the same way to bring up as much of a sheen as desired. Repeat  annually thereafter.Tung oil would do as an alternative. Do not use linseed(flax) oil.

 MATT  (we use a really nice matt varnish that is almost indistinguishable from the oil finish and gives a leathery feel. Requires little or no maintenance) 

HARD GLAZE    (Gloss finish, not suitable for martial arts)                                       

Many are not lead loaded but it is still possible to do so if desired by the buyer. Check out the specs for available options. .
