From the 1700s to the early 1900s, many rural people in Ireland carried sticks as an all purpose accessory in their daily lives. The countryside was very underdeveloped and a stick was a useful tool for balance in crossing uneven or boggy ground, for controlling a dog, driving a cow, pushing overgrown summer vegetation aside or confronting an adversary. Most people cut their own stick and used it as an everyday tool. This type of stick came to be the general publics overall view of what a Shillelagh was, and sellers began to make these for sale to the growing American tourist trade in the early 1900s and they are usually offered for sale to tourists as just blackened sticks. While these 'Regular Shillelaghs' are relatively simple to make and involve little by way of craftsmanship, ours are seasoned and finished to the same standards as our crafted 'walking' and 'fighting' sticks.

 

These sticks  are designed as a walking/ hiking companion. A delight to carry on a country stroll - great for controlling a dog and pushing away wild brambles. Also great for warding off unfriendlies. They are not recommended for someone who needs a walking stick which will support their posture correctly.
